I understand the motivation of Ophelia
and the madness that took her to her doom
incapable of my own distress

I understand the motivation of Shah Jahan
and the building of the greatest monument to love
the world could ever know

I understand the motivation of the poets
with yearning words and bitter declarations
the songs of tortured souls

I understand the motivation of Vincent
with brush and colour his reply
to the callousness of the world

I understand the brokenhearted lover
in shame and sorrow reflecting
the sadness in their eyes

I understand the motivation of Heathcliff
driven by forces outside his control
to avenge those wrongs

I understand the motivation of Tristan
who dies alone, of grief unending
even as Isolde flies to him

I understand the motivation of Orpheus
who would tread the underworld itself to bring
his love back to his side

I understand those who say, with absolute conviction
that we get but one true love, brought by fate
and none shall ever compare

I understand all those who have died of love
or the lack where once it was, in grievous
wounding a fatal blow
