Pharos

I was adrift when you found me
storm tossed on an endless ocean
under sightless skies
not rudder nor sail to steer my way
awash on currents and random tides
some lost mariner of indeterminate conception

You brought me safe harbour
shelter from the squalls and vagaries of the sea
and stars to guide my way
repaired my boat and sewed my sail
professed undying devotion to this forgotten swab
beacon of purity and lodestar of light

I drifted no more at the mercy of the waves
Secure in arms and whispered benedictions
Castaway to welcoming shore
Home port now found and with pleasure kept
Your smile my anchor and calm
To land on this beach of sunlit sand

Then in merciless silence you set me adrift
again to be lost on the sea
in wanton cruelty set my ship to flame
sail shredded and sinking in the cold grey
tied to the barren mast with cord of lost hope
and cast to the wind and the storm

I am adrift and unfound on these raucous waves
storm tossed on an endless ocean
under sightless skies
not rudder nor sail to steer my way
awash on currents and random tides
some lost mariner of indeterminate conception

Lost mariner
