Cherish

There will never be another
no soft touch or tender kiss
no sweet caress or whispered words
the collapse of gravity is upon me
and as I float, I wait
for the air to run out
fading shadow of the man I was
still I’d run, walk, crawl
at your merest word of encouragement
with only love to guide me

There will never be another
no sharing of bed or breakfast
no laughter or sunset embrace
the end of time is upon me
and as the hands move, I wait
for the darkness that comes
crumbled edifice of the man I was
still I’d swim, fly, plead
at your merest hint of affection
with only love to guide me

There will never be another
no panted passion or limbs entwined
no hand-held walk or laughing delight
the swan song of light is upon me
and as the gloom grows, I wait
for the final obscurity to come
forgotten echo of the man I was
still I’d rush, race, limp
at your merest word of endearment
with only love to guide me
your love that will not come
