Shore

This is the last gasp
that flailing reach before the third time under
there is no lifeguard at this beach
drowning now seems somehow
the inevitable result
I swam too far from the shore
driven by my lack of skill
my impetuous reliance on you to save me
a fool to trust and yet
I would drown again while reaching
for the breath you withheld
There is no CPR, no breath of life
No pretence of responsibility
You are not here to save, just witness
the dying on your rocky shores
and still I kick, against tides and currents
that futile endeavour
as I am anchored to your reef below
